This study aimed at investigating the effect of using the tape recorder in teaching the listening skill in the English curriculum (PETRA) for the ninth grade. Two units from the ninth grade English curriculum were chosen. These units contain: a listening comprehension passage, a dialogue, a dictation exercise, a pronunciation exercise, a poem, and a grammatical exercise.

The hypothesis of this study stated that there was no statistical significant difference at the 0.05 level between the mean scores of two 9th grade classes at Jeansafout Secondary Coeducational School taught through two different methods: the first class was taught English units through the traditional method (chalk and talk) and the second was taught the same units through the non-traditional method with the help of the tape recorded.

The data were collected and were analyzed, results were shown in tables, t-test was used to test the null hypotheses. The results, of testing as revealed in chapter (4), are the following: There was no significant difference between the means of the two groups (Males and Females). That is to say, the performance of both groups is almost at the same level in listening comprehension, dialogue, dictation, poetry and grammar. And there was no significant difference between the means of the two groups (Males Only). That is to say, the performance of both groups is almost at the same level in listening comprehension, dialogue, dictation and grammar.
